Understanding How Moonlight and Moon Phases Effect Swordfishing

In order to better understand why swordfish concentrate their feeding habits at certain depths on a given night or why the bite is better at different times of the month, you need to better understand how the effects of moonlight influence swordfish.

Before you can understand how moonshine affects swordfish, you need to understand the moon and its phases. The moon revolves around the earth in 27 days. The first phase of the moon at the beginning of its new revolution is what we call the “New Moon”. The new moon is when the face of the moon is in the shadow of the earth, causing the moon to reflect no light and appear dark to us. A week after the “new moon”, the moon will be in its first quarter, which means that a quarter of the moon’s total surface reflects light back to earth. Since we only see 50% of the moon’s surface, when the moon is in its first quarter it is actually referred to as a half moon by many of us because half of the moon’s face reflects the light. A week after the first quarter, the moon will be full and the entire face of the moon visible to us will reflect light. A week after the Full Moon and again the moon will appear at half since it will be in its last quarter. One week after last quarter, the moon will have completed its lunar cycle and will again be a “New Moon”.

Now, if we go back to our past swordfish trips and catch statistics, we would see patterns for a few nights where all bites were at depths greater than 200 feet. And we would also see a pattern for a few nights where all the stings were at depths less than 100 feet. These changes are a direct effect of the amounts of moonlight that were present during these patterns. We know that swordfish are a predatory species that feed on aggregations of squid and mackerel which are both diurnal species meaning that during daylight hours they stay in the darkest depths of the ocean and as daylight wanes and night falls, they rise to the shallower depths. Now moonlight plays a role in where bait aggregations will congregate. For example, during a full moon, since much of the moonlight shines through the surface of the oceans, the bright moonlight will cause the bait to stay deeper in the water column. Conversely, during a new moon with virtually no moonlight breaking the surface of the oceans, the bait will congregate at shallower depths closer to the surface.

Of course, we should always have bait in the deepest and shallowest part of the water column, no matter what moon phase we’re in, just in case the swordfish wanders. However, the brightness of the moon is a very good indication of how deep the majority of swordfish bites will be. On nights when the moon is full and bright, the majority of bait should be fished deeper in the water column.
