Gothic Clothing in the World of Film

The cinema has produced some memorable films with a gothic theme, and the wardrobe department of each of them is crucial in developing the look of the film. Making goth clothing look perfect in a movie is key to looking like the authentic item for those who love movies, books, TV, and music inspired by this style. This article examines common themes found in Gothic clothing, as they have appeared in several films.

The original Blade, starring Wesley Snipes, hit the big screen in 1998 and grossed $130 million worldwide. His success is sometimes credited with starting a revival of comic book characters in movies. Central to the film’s look were Wesley Snipe’s (Blade) gothic attire. A long black leather jacket with metal buckles forms the main garment, while Snipe’s face is perpetually dominated by a pair of dark sunglasses. Heavy boots and of course the rather pointy weaponry complete the look which could no doubt have influenced subsequent films. Blade is based on a Marvel comic book character, which was developed in 1973 by Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan.

One could argue that Underworld (2003) featured a character with an icy disposition similar to Snipes – in Kate Beckinsale. She coldly hands out plenty of kills to “Lycans” (a form of werewolf) in a manner similar to Snipes, though understandably adding a bit more sexiness for male audiences. In terms of dispatching the enemy, Beckinsale opts for a handgun – and prefers to give her victims eye contact – as she doesn’t wear sunglasses when delivering her killer blows. His gothic clothing is similar to Snipes’, however, featuring a long black overcoat, with an overall feel of PVC and blackness pervading his look.

Beckinsale stuck to gothic clothing and the movie theme in 2004’s Van Helsing, in which she co-starred with Hugh Jackman. Grossing $300 million, the film did well financially, although it did not receive rave reviews from critics. The gothic theme ran through the film though – with a Kate Beckinsale dressed in black gothic attire similar to Underworld – but in this film the male lead gets the trench coat, especially if the producers broke with tradition and opted for a brown one. This innovation could be considered the only one from the film, which gave us fairly standard gothic-vampire fare.

These three films feature notable common themes in terms of gothic clothing, particularly associated with the main characters. Black leather or PVC comes back again and again, along with dramatic long trench coats – usually black order. Black pants and heavy boots complete the outfit, ideal for the soldier duties of these bloodthirsty characters.

Incidentally, the weapons wielded by Blade, Van Helsing, and to a lesser extent Underword’s Selene all provide plenty of opportunities to draw a lot of blood. Dripping, squirting and flowing, fresh red blood is one of the prerequisites for any self-respecting vampire or goth movie – no wonder then that these characters choose black goth clothes, a hue that hides a multitude of sins, c ie – the blood.
