For horse racing enthusiasts or for beginners in the sport, I offer my top ten horse racing websites. The list does not include betting platforms, pure handicap sites or blogs. These horse racing sites revolve around sports news, offer an interactive experience and/or allow you to participate in competitions. Drum roll please.
1) Route of the Roses (roadtotheroses.com). This site usually starts from mid-February to the end of each year and lasts until the first Saturday in May. You know what day it is; The Kentucky Derby. It’s a great interactive site where you mount your own stable of horses on their way to the most exciting two minutes in the sport. Thousands of people participate each year in hopes of winning valuable prizes.
2) Horse Racing Nation (horseracingnation.com). This is a relatively new site. This is a great site that gives you the opportunity to design your own silks. As a participant on this site, you are permitted to demonstrate your handicapping prowess as well as comment on other participants’ handicap selections. The site contains news, links to some of the best thoroughbred blogs, key racing videos and other valuable information. These guys do it right!
3) Daily Race Form (drf.com). The online version of North America’s oldest horse racing publication. It contains the best news and disabling information. Drf publishes entries and results for all Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse races in North America. A wonderful feature is the “Race of the Day” where you can download past performances for free. The offers all kinds of disability information, from books to racing cards for sale. Nice site with a wealth of information.
4) Case the Race (casetherace.com). Great website. Has a wonderful free contest that gives you the opportunity to make selections in various predetermined races. It provides you with your own metrics towards contest points and virtual money earned. Then he ranks among the other contestants. For each run, it provides you with its power ratings based on a proprietary scientific formula. Other handicappers from across the country offer their selections for the Saturday races. It’s a nice site. I include it in the list because of the interactive contest.
5) Blood Horse (bloodhorse.com). Fabulous site full of information. Contains all kinds of video shows about trainers, jockeys and horses. Also provides a video for “That Handicapping Show” which is always very informative. Great tidbits of information regarding all sorts of horse racing businesses.
6) National Thoroughbred Racing Association (ntra.com). They have a very well done website. It covers a lot of sports news and information. Has links to other sites with contests and other promotional items. Its key feature is the Stakes Calendar which allows users to access past performance for at least one weekend stakes race.
7) Brisnet.com. A simple site that provides disability information on a membership basis. I’m including it here because it has a “Race of the Day” contest where it provides free past performances that you can handicap and then make your selection for the contest. Currently, it is running a competition where you get one entry for each “Race of the Day” selection you make. The winner gets tickets to the Kentucky Derby in May 2010.
8) Horsehats.com. This is an e-commerce site that has a terrific offering of all kinds of gifts for the horse lover you know. It also has links to all kinds of horse products. I include it here because it has an important element for all handicappers; an alien calculator. You just plug in your choices and it shows how much the ticket will cost. This is especially important when assembling complex ten-cent superfecta notes.
9) Espn.com. You’ll need to hover over “All Sports” for the drop-down menu, then click “Horse Racing.” The news is more or less a rehash of other sites, but they have very good columnists who can offer valuable information. Links to other betting sites and platforms are also there. They have bad update tendencies.
10) CBSsportsline.com. You need to hover over the “more” button for the drop down menu and then click on “horse racing”. Has a message board where you can talk about horse racing with other fans. It contains some links to other sites. It seems the sport is an afterthought for them.
