Suppression of the Alpha Male
Before the 1970s, models for young men were numerous. Their attributes were well described and positive. There were examples of successful men in many situations: head of household, business and political leader, sportsmen, doctors, lawyers, assembly line workers, miners, airline pilots, explorers, military personnel, etc. education plans as well as manual skills development programs and technical schools, all primarily developed around what a man would need to support a family. The role of men and women in American society was pretty much established. The directing/building/creating/directing types of vocations were mainly held by men.
Women were mostly represented in supporting roles for men and rarely in managerial and/or decision-making positions. This representation of the role of women in society was largely due to the fact that the majority of them were wives and stay-at-home mothers, and even though the role played by women while being wives and mothers Homemaking also in many cases involved managing family finances, it was not considered a skill set. Women worked, among other things, in nursing, medical technologist, secretarial work, service personnel, organization, teaching in primary and secondary schools.
Were these types of vocations populated by women because of their free choice, or was it because of societal pressures?
The reasons for these work choices can be debated although there is objective evidence that early in life most women lag behind men in innate spatial and logical cognition.
The need to be in control and to be competitive was not recognized outside of the family situation. Their physical strength being only forty percent of men led them to be considered less capable for vocations that required physical strength. Has all this led women to seek work in disciplines other than technical ones?
Women were seen as the suppliant gender in sex. Men were seen as the aggressor, leading some to misunderstand that in cases other than rape cases, women are the controlling sex when and if sex takes place. She also had to conform to his expectations of sex, which also led to the misconception that the male was dominant.
The reasons for the choices at the time are important for this article only to establish a context to examine how things have changed since those days and to access the potential impact of these changes on men.
Minority groups within society began to gain more attention while gaining a greater role to play in societal decision-making as women rose to prominence. Several minority groups have been identified: Women, people by place of origin [Latinos, Asians, and the like]Blacks, disabled, LGBT people and some others.
Recently young men have committed very bad deeds that have resulted in the death of innocent people and I wonder if societal changes over the past five decades have played a part in these actions.
I believe the primal drives in men are always strong and a driving force for their actions. They always strive to be leaders among men and demonstrate it by making almost every activity competitive. They always have the feeling of playing the role of protector of “their” female, if she is modified. That “their” female should admire and respect them. They believe that they should be the decision makers in their relationship while conceding wife’s things, such as decorating the abode and controlling household issues, to “their” wife and that they should be the ultimate family discipline. Their image, as they perceive it, is always that of being at the head of the relationship with “their” female. They fall back on sport to reinforce this. They still believe that they voluntarily concede leadership to “their” wife and that society as a whole supports this belief.
Weakness in a man is a very bad attribute. This diminishes his very reason for success and his sense of self-esteem suffers.
Men always faced rejection by women of their advances, but they always had the strong leadership role models in the media to admire and impress. This is no longer the case.
Television is the main source of contribution to society. The participation of women, LGBT people and minorities in the world of advertising has replaced that of heterosexual men. The decision-making process in marketing and advertising is heavily influenced by women and LGBT groups and begs the question: has the outcome reached the point where heterosexual alpha males are the subject of derision or repression ? It seems that may be the case.
Gender portrayal on TV impresses society with what genders should be. An example is the feminine complaint of the desirable woman: slim, physically fit, well-proportioned and beautiful.
As for the young man: no more strong models; the heroes of clear thinking and decision-making that he imagines his role to be. It does not have an area of activity free of females. There is no place where men can be men without the effect of female disapproval of her priorities and value system. In nearly every commercial, and most television sitcoms, the man is portrayed as a clumsy idiot, unable to exist without a woman to make decisions, protect and defend him. Even in the world of sports, reporting and discussion shows are no longer the preserve of men. Although the sport is contested by men, women, some of whom don’t even play the game, now lead the panel discussions and reports, replacing the men who once did. The young man needs role models, not anti-alpha male role models and not just men who excel at a game.
With only impressions of inadequate men and women’s leadership on television, and in some cases his mother running the family, the young man has nowhere to turn to legitimize his need to be a competitor. Does it diminish his accomplishments? his sense of self-esteem? Is academic success an alternative? How does he deal with frustration? What role in society does he see himself? How would he act in this situation? What effect could this have on the already difficult need to earn the respect of men and attract a woman?
