Wood ducks, also known as Woodies, are one of the most beautiful and sought after sporting waterfowl. It’s one of the most unique hunting experiences, as you can succeed in multiple habitats with minimal gear. Living in the Mississippi flyaway, you know exactly where the nearest pond or swamp with wood ducks is. Hopefully by the end of this article you will be equipped with additional knowledge and new tips for the hole.

Rest habits

Wood ducks tend to roost in the backwoods of swamps and other small bodies of water caused by flooding. Woodies in the afternoon gives you fast action, but you have to be patient as they launch missiles close to your setup. Many hunters make the mistake of nest hunting because they see thousands of ducks in the area. BE CAREFUL! Hunting in the heart of the roost will ruin the hunting area for an extended period of time. When spotting, be sure to analyze each direction of flight in and out of the hole. Find an ideal flyaway in a narrow stream or quagmire away from roost and crouch for an awesome chase.

Use decoys and call

I know you’re thinking, “I’ve never heard of wood duck luring?” The easiest way for wood ducks to ignore your decoy setup is to place it in the flight zone I mentioned earlier in the article. Calling wood ducks should be at their feeding destinations in the early morning or late evening before roosting. If your setup is correct, the woodies will fall into your setup like a herd of mallards. Wood ducks will work your decoys like diving ducks or puddles when positioned correctly. Don’t forget your wood duck whistle to increase their curiosity!

Step on Woodies to shoot

Duck hunters love the thrill of pulling wood ducks out of beaver ponds or streams. The jump-shoot method of duck hunting is used when duck populations are scattered on the property. In my own experience, the most successful area for jumping Woodies is in a winding creek with varying water level depths. Moreover, these streams are efficient due to the food supply. Trees such as white oak, red oak, and beech produce nuts and foliage that attract wood ducks. During the summer, find a meandering stream on your property that is lined with nut trees and when you return during fall wood duck hunting season, get ready to shoot!

• Use decoys and calls when hunting at feeding grounds (not in outlet streams)
• Shallow currents: walk along the banks trying to jump
