Using Self-Hypnosis For A Snow Balling Effect of Enhanced Determination
Here in the UK, despite being a relatively small country (compared to places like the US, China and Russia anyway), we have a wide variety of weather conditions, and we discuss it a lot and with enthusiasm.
Yes indeed, in Scotland and parts of the north of the UK there is a lot of snow while we have sunny days here on the south coast of England. Interesting stuff, huh?
We get crazy and excited when it snows, but we don’t get as many as many other parts of the country each year.
I was hoping to use the fact that Eskimos have hundreds of words for snow in the blog entry today. Serious research and googling revealed that this was a myth I had fallen for and believed in for a number of years. Why didn’t I apply a modicum of critical thought to such a myth?
Despite this setback, snow is a useful metaphor for my purposes in this article. Snow comes in all shapes and sizes, although there are no real Inuit words for each species. So, the snow is going to be the metaphor and the basis for this process of self-hypnosis here today which aims to develop determination. People often refer to an event or phenomenon that “snowballs” when it gets bigger and the kind of footage used on television that shows how snowballs can start out tiny and then grow to such a force when they roll down the hill that they blow away all obstacles.
Recently, many people engaged me in a discussion about the difference between being motivated and being determined.
Determination tends to be more about having a sense of purpose and providing a solution for some outcome. While motivation tends to be the fuel that mobilizes us towards something more natural. Although intrinsic motivation (motivation from within, rather than extrinsic motivation being something external that motivates us, such as monetary gain or praise, etc.) is indeed very similar to determination.
I always think of determination as a bit more gritted teeth when that happens. It’s much more conscious and motivated. Sometimes it’s a means to an end while motivation sometimes tends to be viewed as a more enjoyable experience.
Either way, we’ll figure it out today. We’re going to grit our teeth without the hassles of bruxism, and we’re going to roll up our sleeves and go head-to-head in the direction we want to go… Wherever and whatever it is for you.
So ideally have an idea in your mind of what the goal of your determination will be. What are you going to decide on? What do you want to be determined to achieve or complete? Think about how you plan to exercise this determination. With that in mind, embark on this process.
7 steps to snowball your determination:
The first step: Induce hypnosis. You can do this by any means you desire or know of. Engage in the moment, be absorbed and focused, and allow your mind to be open and receptive. You can use your breath, progressive relaxation, a mindfulness process, or any other process you know.
Once you have induced hypnosis, move on to step two.
Second step: In your mind, using your own imagination in whatever way is most relevant and best for you, imagine some sort of mountain or high hill covered in snow and you are on top. Notice the view around you, note the air temperature and admire the scenery, hear all the sounds and feel how good it is to be free and impressed by such a snow covered scenery all around you, from breathing clean, invigorating air and noticing that there is a valley below you.
As you imagine this, let the imagination and the images take you deeper into your mind.
Think about your own desired outcomes, your own life, and what you want to achieve. This journey to this desired outcome, this journey to this goal has taken you up to this high hill or mountain here and engage in it. Once you have a really vivid scene in front of you, move on to the next step.
Third step: Keep thinking about your result, this thing, you know it. That thing you want to achieve, your goal, the desired outcome. For some reason your progress may have faltered, or you got stuck at some stage along the way, or you just kept giving up or whatever, you’re here at this stage, on that mountain top representing your journey so far towards that thing you want to achieve and be more determined than ever to make sure you get there now…
Looking down the valley, you see that all along the side of the mountain are a wide variety of shapes and sizes of obstacles and barriers that represent excuses or problems or things that you know have upset you. held back and hindered your progress toward your desired outcome. Look at them, see what they are, how they are, where they are positioned and think about what they represent… All those things that have held you back.
But not anymore. Oh no.
With that vision and thought process firmly in mind, take the next step.
Fourth step:Reach to the ground where the snow is at your feet and around you and pick up the snow and notice how powdery, light and fluffy it is in this form. This may well be representative of your efforts so far in trying to achieve the desired result.
But notice now that if you scoop enough of it into a big handful and compact it with determination and positive intention, you can form a small snowball. Wrap it up tight and make it strong, like the strength you know you have deep inside. Wrap it tightly and compact it to represent the powerful core of your potential determination that you are going to fully realize in your life very soon.
Make it tight, hard and round and be really assertive with it. Roll it around your feet and begin to notice the intention you have, beginning to ensure that more snow sticks to your snowball. The snow attracts more snow and starts to get bigger and stronger and it grows. Roll it until it’s the size of a soccer ball, then roll it to the edge of the hill or mountainside and gaze down into the valley that stretches away in front of you.
Think about how you want things to be in your life. Think about how you know you are more than capable of achieving whatever you set your mind to. Think about old obstacles that you want to let go and overcome. With the snowball poised like a cannonball ready to fire, proceed to the next step.
Fifth step: Now comes the fun part. Go deep inside your mind and develop all your strength, courage, steadfastness and make sure you know you are capable of it, then use all of that and push the snowball over the edge of the mountain while watching her roll deeper and deeper into the side there.
As it rolls lower and lower, moving faster, tell yourself that you are going deeper in your mind and going deeper inside yourself to this place. of realizing potential and where change is happening.
Now watch the snowball get bigger and bigger, stronger and more powerful. What started as your intention and the foundation of a small, hand-crafted snowball is now a large snowball accelerating and gaining momentum down the side of the mountain. Watch it overcome obstacles, watch it deliberately explode through barriers, watch it move towards your potential, towards success.
As it builds momentum and rhythm, begin to notice a feeling within yourself right now. Notice that somewhere within you there is a slight sensation. Whatever it is and however it feels, start developing and amplifying your resolve. As the snowball grows and develops, allow the sense of determination within you to amplify, exaggerate and grow, spreading throughout your being, filling your body and mind with purpose and of a sense of knowing.
Just so you know you’ve got what it takes. You know that very quickly you realize what you want to achieve. You think about your next steps for progressive action and what you plan to do with that determination as it grows within you.
Maybe you imagine it as a color or a sound, or just let it grow as a distinct sensation that you expand and amplify as the snowball descends down the mountain, removing obstacles. , obstructions and barriers as it moves on a distinct path to your desired outcome.
As it progresses, it becomes so powerful that it unleashes a veritable avalanche and sweeps like a totally compelling and undeniable force that rushes through you, erasing all last vestiges of doubt. You go further in your mind and the avalanche only ends and reaches the foot of the mountain when you are sure you are filled with a level of determination that you know means you are going to move on to the action.
When this happens, enjoy it and move on to the next step.
Step Six: You now know that the path in front of you, leading you to the desired result, is clear. There are no more obstacles, no excuses, no doubts. You are filled with a sense of healthy determination that will ensure you take decisive and assertive action in your life now. Begin to think of yourself moving with the momentum of this snowball and avalanche, moving mightily towards your goal, that you remain undeniably strong and powerful, filled with purpose and direction that cannot be stopped and that ensures you achieve what you want to achieve.
Tell yourself that you can do it and you are doing it now. You take this action. You use your powerful determination and you get things done and your goals become easier and easier to achieve.
With that sense of purpose installed, move on to the final step.
