Safety Features of Small Trimarans

In the opinion of many sailors, small trimarans are safer than other types of small sailboats. Their unique design allows them to be safe both in the way they sail, as well as in the design of the trimaran itself.

First of all, it is a fact that small trimarans (and all trimarans in general) do not carry lead ballast to balance the boat. This means that this particular weight does not reside in the bottom of a hull. If any of the boat’s three hulls were to be damaged, it would not have that weight of ballast that would drag the entire craft under water…where it would begin to serve as a new home for a variety of fish species.

Indeed, most small trimarans contain several watertight compartments inside each of their 3 hulls. As well as providing valuable storage space for trimarans, the pods and main hull often have airtight pockets tucked away in certain parts. They would work to “support” the boat and prevent it from being totally submerged, even if the main hull was badly damaged.

The safety of the trimaran is also offered by its wide beam. Their stabilizers produce a more stable ride than most other types of sailboats. Boats generally do not “heel” when sailing. There are far fewer photos of monohulls in distress as they generally sink. There is no possibility to photograph the boats that disappear from the surface of the water.

Small trimarans are also lighter than monohulls of similar length. They are easier to tack and jibe. This allows them to be much faster sailboats. This superior performance means that if a storm hits while sailing offshore, then a smaller trimaran will be able to come ashore, while other boats will still be battling big waves further afield.

I recently heard of a trimaran that was sailing offshore and hit an unknown object in the water. The main hull filled with water to some extent, but the boat remained stable and drifted until the coastguards could come to the rescue of the stricken boat and its sailors.

If this boat had been a monohull, it would almost surely have filled with water and sunk…and quite quickly. The crew might not even have been able to call for help by sending the distress signal. And even if they had, they probably should have used a life raft or life jackets until help arrived.

In this scenario, wouldn’t you rather be in a trimaran? I would… every time.
