It’s hard to believe that one of the most popular teams in NFL history was founded as the Dallas Texans in 1960. However, all of these losses have resulted in major changes to the Chiefs’ management and on-field roster. The Chiefs have a new owner, a new offensive coordinator and a wide receivers coach. Head coach Herman Edwards is still back and the team recently added depth to the roster. Recently, the Chiefs signed Anthony Alabi, kicker Nick Novak, safety Erick Harris, cornerback Chad Johnson, defensive tackle TJ Jackson, linebacker Demorrio Williams, tight end John Paul Foschi and fullback Oliver Hoyte , among others.
The 2008 NFL Draft was the biggest news, however, as the Chiefs picked coveted LSU’s Glenn Dorsey as their first-round pick and the fifth overall pick. The team also selected guard Branden Albert, running back Jamaal Charles and receiver Will Franklin among 8 other high caliber players. It’s not too surprising that Kansas City was named the ultimate “winner” of the draft, considering they got 12 rookies overall, the largest rookie pool, and both of their top-15 selections. Dorsey’s draft was the biggest news, especially since the team surprised a few by picking Dorsey when they were in no dire need of a defensive tackle. The team is also avoiding concerns about Dorsey’s legs, believing he’s healthy enough to play, and arguably the best player in the draft. Will the Chiefs use their draft picks and make it to the playoffs this season?
Many people wonder if Brodie Croyle has what it takes to lead the franchise to a Super Bowl in his third year wearing a Chiefs jersey. Fortunately, the return of Larry Johnson and the sure hands of Tony Gonzalez should give him the chance to get rid of the ball quickly. Unfortunately, Larry Johnson was only on track for barely 1,000 yards before he was injured last year and his replacement Smith couldn’t move the chains effectively. In order to give Brodie the time he needs to pass the ball, the Chiefs offensive line will need to help establish the running game for the elite veteran.
