UNO Should Continue to Have an NCAA Sports Program
The UNO student-athletes have had to endure a bumpy ride over the past two years. The problem started when Hurricane Katrina damaged base athletic facilities and the campus. Registration still has not fully recovered!
Following the devastating hurricane, nearly nine sports teams were suspended, leading to a drop in student enrollment. Subsequently, funds from tuition fees were hit hard. To overcome this situation, the State budget implemented cuts which aggravated the setbacks of the athletics accounts department. Without the restoration of these funds, it is almost certain that athletics programs will not survive. And students recently voted no to a fee increase to keep athletics going.
On top of that, UNO is already in year four of the five-year waiver that was granted by the NCAA in order to retain Division I status without the minimum number of teams. In fact, what they should do is opt for Division II status. This way, there are no attendance requirements, but scholarships are still available.
Ultimately, in a recession, do we really want to raise unemployment numbers and make things worse? If sports are eliminated, coaches will lose their jobs, student-athletes who do not transfer (which many will lose) will lose scholarships, and there will be no sporting events, which according to the most people, framed their college experiences.
The fate of athletics in the UN now rests with the state legislature. The state needs to take this issue into its own hands and ensure that sports opportunities for students remain intact, and perhaps even find a way to increase them. The elimination of the sports program would be a great loss for the UN and the community.
