Importance of Character in Sports Performance
I don’t think there is a Viagra pill that can suddenly rid sports of all its ills and instill such spirits that would catapult the sportsman to ultimate glory. Such short-term measures can show instant results momentarily, but not repeatedly. They won’t make you a champion. There are no miracle solutions.
I envision a holistic view of improving sporting activity, developing available talent, helping them achieve excellence in their discipline and also preparing them for a productive life after their “sporting life is over. “. In the process of creating an excellent sportsman, I also dream of shaping his character and personality, which would not only serve him during an active sports career, but throughout his life. There is incredible talent that we cannot afford to ignore.
I have a vision that someone should take under their wing, without disrupting the existing structure of “training”, all potential young sportsmen in the age range of 8 years old to 14 years old and 15 years old to 21/25 years, to impart soft skills and emotional literacy. Literacy must be provided continuously in the form of “courses” during their sports training in the centres. Thematic workshops should also be organized at regular intervals. The idea is to anchor these skills in their psyche so that they automatically start to “live” these skills. Sports fields should be their “classrooms” where they learn to be sports literate in soft and emotional skills.
It is widely accepted that sports and games provide lessons for the development of soft skills and personality/character. In fact, games and sports serve as a resource for teaching soft skills in management and other educational institutions. When an athlete participates in games and competitive sports, he tends to learn and develop his soft skills unconsciously. By the time he masters these skills, his active sporting life is over. He does not have the opportunity to use these skills to contribute to excellence in the sport discipline he has chosen. It’s too late. I recommend some “reverse engineering” just by changing the timing of its exposure. While developing athletic skills, the athlete must learn soft skills and emotional literacy side by side. When he graduates to a team of a certain “level”, it has to be with all those skills in place. Thereafter, he has ample opportunity to contribute to individual or team excellence as the case may be. And of course, his skills are not only used to achieve excellence, but also honed and improved with live experience.

– Cooperation and helpfulness

Emotional intelligence/literacy (both team and individual)
– emotional self-awareness
– Accurate self-assessment
– Self-confidence
– Emotional self-control
– Empathy
– Influencing others
The final set of skills to be imparted will be decided following a detailed needs analysis and after necessary interaction with athletes and coaching/support staff.
Most people involved in sports agree that proper behavior makes the sport better and that character is important. Although much attention is paid today to the ideals of sportsmanship or positive relational character – respect for self, teammates, opponents and the game – little attention is paid to the influence that character of an athlete or coach actually has on performance. Apart from the evolution of “sportsmanship” programs that aim to raise awareness of the realities of sport today, the relationship between character and performance is rarely addressed. Despite the logical connection between character and performance, many coaches dismiss this as an intangible factor that is immeasurable!
Performance and relational character are not incompatible. The “performance character” focuses on the diligence, perseverance, and self-discipline necessary for commitment to academic, athletic, and other areas of excellence. “Moral or relational character” embodies the traits of integrity, justice, benevolence, and respect – necessary for successful interpersonal relationships and ethical behavior.
Character strengths such as hope, perseverance, creativity, and zest are just a few traits that, once habituated, offer sport participants the greatest opportunity to enhance their performance and enjoyment. Hope is about goal setting and optimism, creativity is about finding alternative strategies to improve performance, and zest is about the enthusiasm players and coaches bring to the field.
An athlete who has developed a strong character can rely on a bedrock of well-formed habits to aspire to true excellence. Sports arena competition, coupled with a personal goal of performance optimization, challenges the athlete to continually expand their abilities through deliberate practice, purposeful, and effortful repetition. We need to adopt good habits and improve our skills; we can’t just “wish” them to happen. What separates successful artists from others is the ability to make the most of what they can control in their aspirations for optimal performance. This does not mean that anyone can become an elite athlete, but it does mean that athletes can strive to perform to the best of their abilities – striving for excellence as individuals and as members of a team.
