Skateboarding is a very popular action sport around the world that involves rolling and performing tricks on a skateboard. Believe it or not, the skateboarding industry is a $4.6 billion industry and it is believed that there are over 11 million active skateboarders. Just recently it was announced that skateboarding would be in the 2020 Olympics.
There are two different types of skateboards. There is a longboard and a shortboard. Longboards are very different from short boards because longboards are like their name very long and also have large wheels which allow for higher speeds to be navigated. On the other hand, short boards have more of a concave for pop and are smaller and are more ideal for tricks than just riding.
It is said that skateboarding was created in California but no one really knows. Skateboarding was created in the late 1940s and early 1950s by surfers who wanted to do something when the waves were flat. The first skateboard made was commissioned by a surf shop in Los Angeles to help surfers use their surf maneuvers on land. They used boards shaped like surfboards and carved from local streets and pools that were empty. The old school boards were a square wooden board with wheels on it. In the 1970s skateboarding boomed, there were more companies making boards and it was getting really popular. Skateboarders were surfing empty pools as if riding a wave that revolutionized skateboarding. At that time, there were a lot of competitions in the California and Florida areas where most of the time the rewards were cash and corporate sponsorships. I would say that in the 2000s skateboarding really took off and became one of the most popular action sports in the world. Also, the board manufacturing technology was better, so instead of wooden boards with simple designs, the boards became more sophisticated. In the sense that the boards have been made with more concave which helps with jumping and grinding rails.
There are two different types of skateboarding, street and vert. Vert is the act of skateboarding on a skate ramp or incline that involves the transition from the horizontal plane to the vertical plane. The place where skateboarders usually green skate is a skate park which is a park designed for skateboarding that has ramps, rails and other obstacles that skateboarders will be able to hit on a skateboard. The most famous green skateboarder that everyone knows about this guy is Tony Hawk. As a skater, once you have that mindset of things you can hit, you’ll never lose that thought. When skating on the street, you don’t have to climb stairs, but you can hit ledges that are everywhere or climb on a random wall. There’s a lot of controversy about this because a lot of skateboarders get arrested or call the cops because companies or people think skateboarders are destroying their property. Which in most cases isn’t true, but I get why they don’t want skaters to do that, because running over a handrail leaves scratches on the rail. That’s why skateboarders have such a bad stereotype of being destructive savages.
