We know Greek boxers wore gloves in competition, but they weren’t the padded boxing gloves we see in the sport today. In fact, the gloves of Greek boxers looked more like simple bandages that covered their hands and arms up to the elbows. Besides these gloves, the boxers of ancient Greece were also completely naked during their competitions.

The term “boxing” was first introduced and used in England in the early 18th century. This history of the sport mentions that this term was created to help distinguish between a fight entered into to settle a dispute and the type of fight presented for sport and conducted under a strict set of rules.

In these modern days of sport boxing, the term describes the sport that involves two contestants, or boxers, who are fully kitted out in padded gloves, protective headgear, and mouth guards.

Boxers face off for competition in a boxing ring and they fight for a set number of bout rounds or until one boxer knocks out the other. They are also monitored by a referee who is on hand to ensure that the fighters operate according to the recognized and accepted rules of the sport.

Throughout the history of boxing, men have made up the largest group of participants in the sport and this is still the case today. However, more and more women are choosing to participate in this sport, both for its competitive aspects and also because it is a good physical workout with many health benefits.

Throughout the last years of the 19th century and all of the years of the 20th century, amateur and professional boxing activities and organizations ran roughly parallel in popularity and interest.

However, contrary to the status enjoyed by the professional boxer for some twenty years of the 20th century, amateur boxing seems to have lost a significant part of its following and its popularity has declined sharply.

Throughout the history of boxing, there have been those who have had serious doubts about the sport, especially regarding it as entertainment.

The major issue has revolved around boxer safety due to some of the long term health effects that many boxers end up dealing with.
