Should College Athletes Be Paid?
Collegiate sports bring in a lot of money every year at the college major level. These programs bring 30 and sometimes 40 million dollars a year to universities and colleges and the players get nothing. These are the same players who are breaking their backs for college day in and day out and can’t get a share of that money and, to me, that doesn’t seem fair. I know what you might be thinking: that these student-athletes are getting a free education or got a scholarship to play ball at this university. For me, it’s the least they can do.
When I watch college football on Saturdays and see crowded stadiums with cheering fans paying big bucks for a ticket, I think to myself, what company could run a business and not pay its employees? You would think I was talking about a Third World country! Pay players now, please!
Consider this one: Most college coaches earn six-figure salaries — big and small college programs. Some of these college coaches get shoe deals, some get TV and radio deals, and many other perks along the way. Also, if they’re a good coach and win games, they’ll be offered another coaching job somewhere else with more money and bigger benefits! Student-athletes get nothing, and I think something should be done about that. Please pay players now!
They will keep telling you that athletes get free education, free books, free room and board, and the chance to get a good college education that will last a lifetime. So what! Pay the players! I see this whole college thing as slave labor! The coaches make a lot of money off the backs of these players. You hear stories of college athletes taking money or getting paid under the table. You hear those stories of gamers getting cars and lots of money, you hear stories of gamers getting all of that and more. You hear about the families of gamers getting cars and houses to go through this college program. It happens all the time in secret!
Why do players take this money and cars and houses for their families and more? Well, one of the reasons is recruiting; some college programs feel that in order to recruit a major recruit, they have to offer these things. Some college programs (not all) have to give something away to attract these kids. Some of these players come from poor backgrounds, so for these kids, earning money is a big deal, especially if the players and their families don’t have any money anyway.
Being a college athlete is very difficult. In the first tier, the number of hours these players put in is high – every day of every week. They are in class all day then there is practice after practice, they go to dinner if they can and then they go to study. Now, this may all sound simple to you, but the time these student-athletes put in is enormous. Then the coaches want more. There might be movies to study and there might be times when they are seen by the athletic trainer. As a student-athlete, you need to focus on your studies and athletic performance or they’ll try to get rid of you.
College athletics is tough. Sometimes at the end of the day you are exhausted and don’t feel like studying or if they have some sort of study table for the players you may not be able to fully concentrate and, often your attention is elsewhere. Think of the millions of people who go to work every day. They work long hours and may have long commutes. I’m sure the last thing workers want to do is spend overtime doing more work. Most workers want to relax, maybe grab a beer and watch TV, then call it a day. The big difference is that they are paid for service and time and college baseball players are not.
Most college student athletes don’t graduate from college and one of the reasons is the workouts and games they play. There is so much pressure to do well that something will fall and something is their upbringing. College coaches are notorious for looking the other way when it comes to student-athletes and their colleges as long as that player can help win games.
For most college athletes, when their eligibility is exhausted, college programs no longer require their services. Why would they? For 4 years these college programs worked these young men and women to death every day. College programs got everything they could get from these players and more. At the college level or any level, it’s all about winning games and making lots of money.
Take a look at baseball; if a high school baseball player is really good, they can be offered a contract to sign with a major league baseball team. Sometimes the offer is $200,000 and, I’ve heard, up to $2 million. Now, if that high school baseball player takes that money, he loses his college eligibility. Some high school baseball players pass on the money to attend college where they can improve, hone their baseball skills, and be drafted again by a major league team. Many high school baseball players take the money and try to make it in the big leagues. A lot of players never make it to the majors. Some play in the minor leagues for years until they realize that their dream of playing in the majors will not come true and they move on.
Once you’ve taken that money, you can’t go back and try to play college baseball. The same is true for all other sports. You’ll have high school basketball players trying to make it to the NBA; you have young men trying out for the NFL. Many of these athletes have never given an education a chance and many of those in college have never graduated.
College athletes struggle with their colleges. Many do not graduate and some simply drop out. College athletics isn’t for everyone and many student athletes can’t make it, so pay the players! Pay them something for all their time and effort!
When these college programs play bocce and make millions off the backs of players and the players still get nothing, that’s wrong. When it’s “March Madness” time for college basketball and millions of people are glued to TV everyday for hours on end and players give it their all, they still get nothing !
Why would it be a problem to pay the players? Schools make millions of dollars anyway. This is not Mexico or China where workers are paid $1.00 an hour to make billions for a company – you know slave labor!
Why do you think players take money from many outside sources? Why are players suspended from the team for breaking team rules? Why are college programs put on probation? It’s because of the money. You have a lot of players from disadvantaged backgrounds where there is no money in their families. If these disadvantaged young student-athletes had to pay for their college education themselves, most would not be in a university at all.
Some student-athletes come from backgrounds where the education system is not very good. Their school districts are underfunded and poorly managed. For many student-athletes, their exit is an education with full athletic scholarships. Playing a sport is their future. Many student-athletes focus solely on athletics thinking that one day they will be good enough to play for the pros. So when money dangles in the face of some student-athletes, the temptation must be overwhelming!
For many years we have heard stories of players and managers struggling with money. We’ve heard of situations where entire college programs have been killed by the NCAA because of the money given to players. Why are they doing this? Why is money a problem? One reason is that it’s easy to get certain types of players from certain types of backgrounds. Big university programs can only survive with big top university players, so they pay for them. We all know that paying college athletes is a mistake (fixed by NCAA guidelines). But this rule must change now.
If college athletes receive scholarships, they can be paid. If players get paid, then I think more college athletes will graduate from college because there would be a stronger incentive to work hard in the classroom. Big universities pay college coaches more based on performance and players should be paid as well.
If the players are paid, this corruption will stop. More paying players, more college players selling their shoes, more college players taking jobs that pay them a lot of money just to work a few hours. It’s tough out there for a student athlete! Did you know that a non-student athlete can get a job to earn extra money and can work around their schedule, but a student athlete cannot get a job until the end of the school year and there are restrictions on the type of employment he can have.
In the game of college athletics, the rules aren’t fair for college student athletes! The playing field is not equal. Pay the players!
