Simple Tips to Care For Your Indoor Golf Simulator

Now that you’ve invested in a golf simulator for your home or business, you need to maintain it to keep it looking and working like new. Your manufacturer will have the appropriate recommendations for their systems, and you should always follow the instructions according to their instructions. Every simulator on the market is different and although the simulators are similar there are still significant differences in unit maintenance.

Control the dust!

Always require players to use clean clubs! If you allow players to use even slightly dirty clubs, all that dirt will end up on and around your sim. Dirt and dust do not mix with computer and sensors. Dust can be a huge problem for your system, especially in commercial environments. I have a set of show clubs that I have available to players, I will wipe these clubs down with a damp cloth about once a month just to control dust. I ask my players to wipe down their clubs every time they play just to remove as much dirt as possible. Even if a club looks clean, there can be a bit of dirt in the club groves; that filth will end up on your simulator in a few taps.

The same goes for golf balls, I only allow players to use homemade balls (which are new, never used outdoors) or new balls which I inspect before playing. If a ball has a few scratches, when the ball hits the screen, it can aggravate friction burns on the screen or even damage the screen over time. You want to keep an eye on used balls, over time they can crack or even break, while being used on a simulator.

I recommend removing as much dirt as possible (described above) before players set foot on the simulator. I dust around the computer once a week and also vacuum the area where the ball is hit by the player at least once a week. If you run a commercial golf center, I recommend doing these tasks every day.

Follow the manufacturer’s suggestions for cleaning the projector. Make sure the projector lens is free of debris; can greatly extend the life of the projector bulb, which is very expensive to replace. Most projector manufacturers do not guarantee the bulb at all. So, preventive maintenance of your projector can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars over time.

Keep your detection area clean!

All golf simulators use some type of sensor technology to track and interpret data, to ensure good results your sensors need to be clean. Again, each manufacturer will come up with the correct way to clean the sensors, but a simple trick is to keep the area clear of debris. Often times, tiny pieces of grass break off and over time this can block or disrupt a sensor. If you have a camera-based system, make sure nothing is in view of the camera path. Even a small pebble can cause a camera-based simulator to read incorrectly. My advice, vacuum often and keep all your sensors as clean as possible.

Screen care:

Friction burns will occur on most simulators. This is when the golf ball hits the screen and makes a small mark. You can help minimize those bullet marks by keeping your screen clean. Contact your manufacturer for advice on cleaning their screen. You can simply wipe most screens with a damp cloth (not a paper towel) to remove dust and dirt. Please contact your manufacturer before using water; some screens will be damaged by the use of water. If it’s been a while since you’ve cleaned your screen, you’ll be amazed at all the dust and dirt clinging onto your cloth.
