An Angel Gives 100 Percent
HELPING CHILDREN
It took two years for Molly to make her dream come true, but in a very short time, her cause was joined by a group of like-minded people. “I knew I could do this if I focused on my strengths and found people with skills in areas I didn’t have,” Molly says. “If I could partner with these people, then we would have the chance to do something amazing and make it work. My challenge was: could I find these people?” The answer was definitely “yes” – but what surprised Molly even more is that she continues to find amazing people who want to support what she does, including the Global Angels team who help her realize his vision.
Molly and her husband John had been involved in international charities for over 25 years. Having also started her own business and a life coaching business for business people and the music industry, she was well placed to connect charity and music to create a dynamic opportunity to do something global. to help vulnerable children. “When I saw the huge number of children on earth who were suffering – and that number is growing exponentially due to HIV/AIDS – I wanted to do something that would help them in a meaningful way. I wanted to do it in a way that audiences could easily connect, to help kids in a way that would be fun.”
THE 100% PROMISE
At the same time, in an increasingly cynical world, Molly wanted to assure those who donate to her cause that their money is going directly to where children need it most. “I had the idea for the Global Angels 100% Promise,” she explains. “Every pound or dollar we receive as a donation from the public goes directly to a project on the ground, helping children.”
Global Angels administration costs are covered by corporate sponsors, including their central office in London. “They are Corporate Angels,” she says of the contributing companies. “We have the most amazing Corporate Angels who support us with sponsorships, in-kind donations, expertise, advice, venues and cash donations. Their support not only helps us grow the work of Global Angels in around the world, but it also helps us to continue our promise that all donations from the public will go directly to projects for children.
By partnering with exceptional projects that are already working successfully with children in countries around the world, Global Angels has an extensive resource base of projects to promote to those who wish to give money where it matters. has the most impact to empower and transform children’s lives. “Charities cannot contact us directly for help,” she explains. “What we have is an international advisory board made up of highly qualified experts from business, humanitarian and charity. They research and vet best practice projects from around the world and recommend those that we should support.”
IN-DEPTH REVIEW
What are the criteria ? “We like to support organizations that are self-sufficient, have a proven track record of long-term integrity, and must be fiscally responsible,” says Molly.
“It is also very important that they really understand the needs of children. By working with long-term strategies to develop and empower the children and young people in their care, children themselves have the potential to become agents of transformation in the nation they live in – and this helps to break the cycle of poverty in a nation. We monitor organizations closely to ensure they are actually doing what they say they are doing.
STAR ANGELS
Molly’s children, Natasha and Daniel, are big stars on the international music scene. Natasha had a number one single in America, a number one debut album in the UK and sold over 6.5 million units worldwide. Island Def Jam and artist Polydor Daniel have had four number one hits worldwide, including Gotta Get Thru This and If You’re Not the One, which he also wrote. Molly has used her connections to the music and sports industries to raise the profile of Global Angels, planning some very exciting televised music events to raise money for children’s projects.
“I was very excited to work with the music industry and the sports industry,” says Molly. If you want to change the course of history, if you want to make a radical change in society that lasts for generations, then you have to do it big.
“I thought that as a family we had the opportunity to influence people to adopt values such as kindness, charity towards the world’s poor and the application of compassion: values that transform and empower the lives of the world’s most vulnerable children. The secret would be to find a way to make these values so compelling that young people would embrace them and bring them to life. I believe we need to work alongside their role models, with the heroes they follow. In music and sport there are huge opportunities for the stars that young people admire to become angels, and thus demonstrate the values that we hope they will embrace.”
Pop idols Natasha and Daniel, with the support of their record labels, provide tremendous support for Global Angels by speaking out, making public appearances for the cause, and going where help is needed. Funk and soul musician Nat James and Lord of the Rings star Laura Michelle Kelly also became ambassadors.
“Our Global Angels Ambassadors are very active,” says Molly. Natasha recently traveled to Mumbai, where she worked on projects for street children and rescued children from the sex industry. Daniel in Mozambique; and Laura in Cambodia.
Business Ambassador Hamish Dodds, CEO of Hard Rock International, has been very involved, helping Global Angels get started in the United States and personally assisting the work the Angels do. “Hamish went to Mumbai as an ambassador,” says Molly, “and he was so excited about saving children from the streets and the sex industry that he had a video made that will be released. in every Hard Rock cafe in the world.”
On November 6, 2007, Global Angels will be holding a photo call in Times Square outside the Hard Rock Café featuring Natasha, Daniel, Emmy Award-winning musician Darryl McDaniels of Run DMC, Bear Grylls of Man versus Wild, as well as supermodel Petra Nemkova and other celebrities. The event will be shown live on screens in Times Square, and in the evening Natasha will headline a concert at the Hard Rock Café to launch US Global Angels.
“Hamish is truly an outstanding ambassador,” says Molly. “He really kissed the hearts of the children.” Other great global angels, she continues, include Sir Kevin Smith of GKN, “who has just been involved in one of our projects in Kenya working with street children. His company has donated $500,000 so that we gave them to four projects in Africa”. Charles Mully, a Kenyan businessman, who was once a street child himself, brought 200 street children to his family home 17 years ago. Charles and his wife adopted 1,800 street children into their family. They have a farm where they teach kids about organic farming, and they supply Europe with organic green beans, so the farm is self-sufficient.
“Bear Grylls”, Molly speaks of another enthusiastic Global Angel, “who is a famous TV presenter for the Discovery Channel, flew over Mount Everest in a hang glider. It was the first time anyone had done that, and he raised $1 million, with $500,000 to Global Angels for projects in Africa.”
LITTLE ANGELS
It’s not just adults who can get involved, as Molly explains: “Little Angels are for kids ages 5-14 who are encouraged to do fundraising, like baking and selling cakes, and coming up with their own creative fundraising ideas. It’s important for them to know that 100% of what they raise is going to another child. From the start, children are very enthusiastic about what they raise. do. Little Angels is like a club that they can get involved in. They even have their own website where they can post a video clip of what they’ve been up to.”
There are many ways people can get involved with Global Angels. “Our overall goal is to make the world a safer and more welcoming place for children, and we have considered all causes for children,” says Molly. “We focus on street children and victims of child slavery and trafficking. We help the disabled and provide fresh, clean water to children and their communities.
FEEDING THE CHILDREN
“One of our goals is to feed and educate one million of the world’s most needy children in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Mother Theresa said if you can’t feed all the children, so feed a child I think if we feed a child it could make a huge difference It only takes 11 pence a day or £40 a year to feed and educate a child through our school feeding schemes.
Anyone can do that.”
Molly has no shortage of ideas for how people can get involved: “Encourage people to share with their own network,” she suggests, “Hold Angel parties or fundraising events. Encourage companies to donate a portion of their profits or donate to a particular item they manufacture or trade with Global Angels.”
A COMMITMENT FOR LIFE
Helping people has always been a part of Molly’s life, and she shares how she got involved. “When I was 17, I was anorexic and bulimic. I had serious problems but I had great people who helped me through it. When I got over it, I made the decision that I was going to be involved in charities and helping others for the rest of my life.”
Molly kept her word: “Knowing that you are really helping children is very powerful and does something wonderful for you. I invite you to become an angel and help us help the children of the planet who need it. Not needed anymore.”
