hot pursuit
Racers must reach the finish line to win. The cops have to stop them from getting there.
By far the best mode of the three available. Just driving the car perfectly doesn’t always translate into a win. You have to adapt your strategy to what’s going on with the other cars, so keeping an eye on the radar is crucial. As a racer it goes without saying that you should avoid cops like the plague, try to make them more attractive to target other racers. Sometimes that means slowing the pace down a bit, especially on longer rides, to avoid a lot of the action. Also try to avoid unforced errors such as hitting hard obstacles hard and other cars – these will consume some of your precious energy. Working as a team when playing as cops really pays off, there’s nothing more frustrating than when another cop tries to take a capture at the expense of the greater good.
Interceptor
A racer against a cop in a one-on-one chase. The weakest link when it comes to online modes, certainly far from the adrenaline rush you get from Hot Pursuit mode. As a racer, just try to get off the cop’s radar. If you are the cop, just try to take down the runner.
Race
Race the world’s most exclusive cars to see who crosses the finish line first. It would have been nice to see “gadgets” enabled as a toggle option for races, allowing spike traps and roadblocks to slow down competitors. It’s simply the fastest car that wins.

Positives and negatives
Good points
The Hot Pursuit mode is a true online masterpiece. Playing as a racer is a complete joy as you attempt to outrun, overtake and outwit enemy police vehicles. However, playing as cops is also a lot of fun. Just driving well doesn’t always win the event, staying away from others and hitting at the right time are just as important
- Autolog feature keeps track of all your stats as you play the game and links to the Hot Pursuit portion of needforspeed.com
- There’s an app for iPhone and iPad that lets you keep tabs on your stats and compare them to your friends
- Easy to find a game on Hot Pursuit
- New cars earned as you level up
- Real cars used (NOTE – it would be great to have a game that combines the graphical power of Gran Turismo 5 with the gameplay of Need for Speed Hot Pursuit)
- The game exudes style, having a feel of “The Fast and Furious” film series
- Superb “Pick up and play” gameplay, the fast amount of online races you can run through in a single session completes the fast and thrilling racing experience when you play
- Online play is more fun than Gran Turismo 5
- Most Hot Pursuit runs don’t tend to run out of steam
- The game is very addictive. It has the call “Just one more game”
- Easy to grasp controls and use of weapons
- Lots of different routes – around 40
- Once you’re out of the race in Hot Pursuit, you can observe other cars – that’s a nice feature. When you’re the cops, you find yourself hanging on the screen, wanting your other team members to catch the runners
- No disconnection observed
negatives
£6.80 (800 Microsoft Points for Xbox 360 users) for an Online Pass. Buying the game used can get expensive if the previous owner redeemed the code (i.e. if you want to race online)
SCPD Rebels Pack, Racer Timesaver Pack, SCPD Timesaver Pack cost £2.72 each (320 Microsoft Points each for Xbox 360 users). These give you 7 new cars, all unlocked Racers cars and all unlocked Cop cars respectively. So £8.16 in total. Also, if you have a copy of a game that has had the online code redeemed and you want to play online (costing £6.80), that totals £14.96
- The replay function (like GT5) rather than snapshots would have been much better. Having replays would really add another level to the online experience
- More than 8 players on Hot Pursuit would have been great
- Interceptor mode is the weakest link in the modes – there’s not really a buzz for one-on-one competition
- Teammates disrupting your good work when you’re a cop can be so annoying
- It can be difficult to find a “race” event where there is the full quota, or almost, of people
- Interceptor mode is hard to win when you’re a cop
- Would have been nice to see “weapons” in “race” mode at least as an on/off option
- The helicopter gadget does not give enough meaningful results
