1920s Lingerie
From the richly corseted and heavily draped lingerie of the Victorian era, 1920s lingerie saw the development of boyish cuts and silhouettes, when curves were concealed by shapeless dresses and flat chests were the trend. The dresses of the 20s were baggy, falling below the knees or ankles. And when it comes to flat-chested styles, women of that era even took the time to bandage their breasts to get that manly shape and look. Briefs, negligees and babydolls adopt this box-shaped silhouette. Negligees are often of chiffon fabrics edged with lace that hung freely in the frame, often cut in the same way as dresses of the period.
The lace and cotton bonnets worn in the 19th century were eventually transformed into lace and silk with ribbons, bows and floral details. The era also introduced boudoir bonnets, which are used by women to hold their hairstyle in place while dressing.
The young flappers of the 1920s made famous the “step-in” shirt, where the lingerie is richly decorated with large laces and silk ribbons grouped in the shape of flowers. The babydoll can be combined with elegant pants.
To achieve the boyish look, 1920s women had different options for wearing the flat-chested, straight-cut underwear. There was an elastic semi-laced corset, delicately boned at the back; there was also the rubber bra that gave off the much sought after and sought after “flat lines” in the chest, combined with rubber reducers that reduced the lines and molded them at the same time, which was also scientifically designed without lacing nor bone; and the Bramley Corsele, which was a corset and bra combination of flesh-colored striped satin cambric, hidden under the flapper dress.
Bras in 1920 were usually white cotton and resembled bust bodices and some were shaped like camisoles. In addition to bandaging their breasts flat against their chests, busty women also adopted the Symington Side Lacer, a bra laced on both sides and then pulled back to flatten the chest. Young women of the 1920s often sported a four-section strapless laced bandeau with mesh lining. In addition to preventing the breasts from moving, these bras gave no shape.
By the late 1920s, the use of corsets declined, nonetheless adapting new styles and designs. Because the corsets made it harder for them to dance properly, the flappers got rid of them and rolled their stockings up to their knees. Long and thick corsets, women opted for Lastex sheaths made of thin elastic straps, with shoulder straps usually attached. Underwear was kept to a minimum, often transparent and light. Women wore cami-bockers, cami-knickers or breeches and a petticoat.
