NIKE
Co-founders Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman began selling sneakers in 1962 as Blue Ribbon Sports (BRS) in an effort to crush Adidas’ dominance in the American market.
From success to success, the company was renamed Nike in 1971, after the Greek goddess of victory. It was also at this time that the brand logo “the Swoosh” was born. 1972 saw Nike’s first public appearance at the Olympics with athlete and Nike employee Steve Prefontaine wearing the sneakers.
After rapid growth in the United States, the company moved to the United Kingdom in 1981. The legendary Jordan range was born in 1985, establishing Nike as a truly major player and fueling fierce competition from competitors. The “just do it” slogan originated in 1988 and helped bring Nike to its current position as market leader.
ADIDAS
Brothers Adolph and Rudi Dassler, both sons of shoemakers, started making sports shoes in 1920 in the small town of Herzogenaurach in Germany. After a falling out between the brothers in 1948, they went their separate ways, with Adolph forming Adidas and Rudi leaving to launch rival brand Puma.
1949 saw the introduction of the three-stripe supporting shoe which became world famous and 1972 saw the release of Adidas’ “trefoil” logo. This was later replaced by the three-stripe “performance” logo.
It is claimed that although there have been sports shoe producers such as Converse and Dunlop before, Adidas is the original godfather of sneaker brands.
REEBOK
Runner Joseph William Foster of Bolton, England developed the spiked running shoe in 1895. His shoes grew in popularity and in 1958 Foster’s grandsons launched the Reebok brand. By 1979, the company was trading in 28 countries, then moved to the United States and created overwhelming demand.
Despite riding high with the launch of the Freestyle women’s aero line and being at the top of the sneaker sales leagues, Reebok lost in the 1980s “sneaker wars” to Nike. with the introduction of the Jordan.
The Pump was hugely successful in the 1990s and the Reebok Classic is now the best-selling sneaker in the UK, but the brand has more of a following around the world than in its own country.
PUMA
The history of Puma begins in Germany in 1948, but as mentioned in the history of Adidas, the roots date back to the 1920s.
The Puma logo was first released by founder Rudi Dassler in 1951 and the “Form Stripe” a few years later in 1958 – a feature designed to provide additional strength and stability to sneakers. They can also take credit for being the first manufacturer to use Velcro straps in 1968.
Having grown from a small family business to being listed on the German stock exchange, Puma is now establishing itself as one of the major players with its combination of original designs and new advancements.
